The Seasons of Advent and Christmas are different, they have different emphasis, one is penitential the other a feast. Hymns, Readings, Collects, Antiphons etc… should reflect this.

And, the first Sunday of Advent is the Christian new year. Today’s primary importance is that its the 8th day of Christmas.

We should compose an elaborate set of liturgies to accompany the Christian year such as are in the Eastern Church. Talk about a glorious catechism!

  3. Matt Says:

Just a quibble, but today has been more than the 8th day of Christmas. It is also the Feast of the Holy Name, one of the feasts of our Lord which take precedence when falling on a Sunday (BCP 16).

Thanks for pointing that out Fr. Gunter. The Daily Office reading schedule did seem a bit odd.

Good point, Fr. Gunter. I got confused because it was the Feast or Solemnity or something of Mary, Mother of God in the RCC.
