As one reads and thinks one begins to get interested in particular rabbit holes in theology.  Feeling called to Ecumenism, Ecclesiology is one such rabbit hole of mine.

I wish to propose some brief propositions that have swum around in my mind.  I realize that they are not positions that the Church has traditionally agreed with but I’m trying to follow out some logic that stems from good Catholic theology.  Mostly, I want to locate the Church.  If one cannot do such, even if in a provisional way, it seems difficult to speak at all about it.  Tell me what you think.

  • I am, along with at least the RCC, a religious inclusivist.  That is to say I trust that there will be many from different faiths who “find salvation.”
  • Karl Rahner called these people “anonymous Christians”
  • Catholicism is concerned with the locatability of the Church as opposed to Protestant spiritualizing and volunteer’izing of the Church.
  • A “Christian” is someone who in faith is baptized into the Church and prayed over to receive the Holy Spirit
  • A so-called “anonymous Christian” has not been baptized nor prayed over to receive the Spirit and even if their ‘faith’ is truly toward God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit it is not shaped in this way.
  • If such a person can be “saved,” and if “there is no salvation outside of the Church,” then by this logic A) People can be “saved” without the Sacraments B) People can be part of the church without knowing it…
  • There seems to be a tension to me.  Now, if the Sacraments are necessary to become part of the Church (as I would argue), AND “there is no salvation outside of the church,” THEN “anonymous Christians” (or their souls?!) must be baptized post-mortem.
  • This is just plain silly to me.
  • Would it not make more sense to use the old dictum (was it Luther?):  ”There is no salvation outside of Christ?”
  • This would allow us to locate the Church, which is absolutely necessary for witness, fellowship, worship, evangelism, discipline, etc…
  • AND it would allow us to remain religious inclusivists who acknowledge, no, Rejoice!, that God is at work in the whole world?
  • This also makes sense of some otherwise puzzling passages in the New Testament

So how ’bout it?  There is no salvation outside of Christ but there is outside of the Church?

Well, it was always a notion.  Certainly, it was mostly even always a possibility.  However, my wife and I have officially committed to it.  We have made a plan, discussed places we can stomach living, and have a feasible plan for income, etc.  So, I went to work shopping for PhD programs.  I will offer for discussion and encouragement “the list.”  More importantly, I offer the methods by which I chose these programs, and hopefully the community here will be able to commiserate with, encourage, and perhaps even begin work on the process together.  So, without further ado in no particular order, “the list”:

University of Toronto – Wycliffe College

University of Notre Dame

University of Chicago

Princeton University

Yale University

Baylor University

Marquette University

Each of these programs fit into the criteria I ultimately worked out with my wife (and it may still change).  /1/ Field of Study:  What do I want to study?  Does the university have faculty currently doing research in that field?  For me, I hope to study philosophical theology (I have been thinking specifically of our theology of time, or of the philosophical necessities of Eucharistic theology)/2/ Placement: At what rate does the university place its PhD students in full-time (tenured?) teaching positions?  The lowest on the list has an 85% placement rate for its graduates.  /3/ Financial Aid: How much of tuition and expenses are covered by Fellowships and Teaching Assistant/Associate positions?  Each of the universities on my list offer between 83% and 100% tuition reimbursement, and an added stipend for teaching undergraduates (which is important for me, since I want to teach).

So, What are your criteria?  Have any of you delved into the application process?  Upcoming posts will cover my experiences with applications, GRE test prep., etc.

In a previous post I reflected on a chaotic year for Anglicans.  The post itself remained largely ambiguous as to whether I saw much hope for the coming year and several commenters wondered aloud what might set us back on track.

Far be it from me to miss an opportunity to wax eloquent on my own opinions.  In this post I shall briefly, unsystematically and without much justification toss out some things I’ve been thinking about that, it seems to me, could contribute to a discussion on being faithful to our Tradition.  There is absolutely no reason that anyone should take the meanderings of a kid too seriously so take it all with a grain of salt.

Of course there are reasons I think these things, but with homework being of much greater importance than blogging I will largely keep from  any thorough justifications for my two cents.

  • 1)For the love of God everybody stop, stop, stop with revisions of all kinds.  A total moratorium on all Prayer Book, theologically informed Canon Law, Liturgical and theological revision for at least a decade.  Our English is not nearly old enough to need updating, our laws left unchanged will not hand us over to chaos, our prayer and collects are and have been largely consistent with Catholic Christian practice and thought and our theology is not yet proved false.  This will provide the common bonds of public trust so as to continue to enable the recognizability within our fellowship.  Any priest altering a liturgy independently should be swiftly disciplined and any bishop or province should be pleaded with to just chill out:  This means you Church of England with your lady bishops (and I’m all about lady bishops), you Nigeria with your canonical marginalizing of the Archbishop of Canterbury, you Episcopal Church with your endorsing diocene composition and implementation of rites of same sex blessing and consideration of Communing the unbaptized, and you Australia with your insufficient theology of Priesthood and Eucharist.
  • 2)  With that in mind, for now focus on those things central to our life and mission as Churches.  Worship, Evangelism, Justice and Catechesis seem to be atop this list to me.

It seems that these two things will build the trust and love necessary to begin to hash out the future of Anglican practice which will largely be in reference to, either for or against, the Anglican Covenant.  It’s here and it’s not going away.  The one, a choice rooted in the Protestant conviction that one is at liberty to interpret the Scriptures on their own, the other a choice for that Episcopal concilarity of the first four universally regarded Ecumenical councils.

But the “Covenant” is not nearly enough.  As the massive and desperately needed book “Love’s Redeeming Work: The Anglican Quest for Holiness” states, there has been at least since the Second World War, a general inability to understand our Anglican identity.  To that end I propose a few things…

  • Episcopacy is absolutely central to Anglican theology and life.  It must be insisted upon and emphasized that in continuity with the very early Church through the ages, we have vigorously maintained that Apostolic Succession by the reality that we have never christened a bishop without the laying on of hands of at least three other bishops so consecrated.  Our Liturgies for consecration have never deviated from this.  We are not Baptists with prayer books, indifferent to the right ordering of our life, neither do we think Church tradition so trite as to be of no authoritative worth.  Our Articles also bear this out as we understand nothing in our liturgies to be contrary to Holy Scripture.
  • Related to the above…What the hell ever happened to Common Prayer?  I propose the possibility of a Book of Common Prayer for use in all Covenanted churches.  Or, at the very least, in terms of the liturgist exraordinaire’ Dom Gregory Dix, the “Shape” of our liturgy should agreed upon, especially our Eucharistic liturgy and the liturgies for Episcopal functions like ordination, baptism and confirmation.  Parishes should not be allowed to use the Roman Mass nor neglect the Hymnal in favor of modern chorus’, or ignore the Rubrics.
  • Similarly we need a Catechism.  Which, though not to be used as a “Confession” in the sense that it’s contents are necessarily to be comprehended or assented to in entirety for Salvation, should be widely used and authoritative.
  • Communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury is fundamental to being Anglican and is one of the only “checks” against loose consularity and is essential to ecumenical dialogue with the Roman and Orthodox Catholic churches.
  • Jesus loves Fender guitars
  • There being a large number of Christians in the so-called “Global South” does not meant that a) those Anglicans can disregard their history b) that they cannot nor need not listen to the insights of more historic fellowships, especially the Church of England c) that they have become our rightful judges
  • The idea of in-house “parties” like “Anglo-catholic,” “Broad Church” and “Evangelical” needs to become progressively left behind in favor of  solidarity.  Evangelicals will have been unfaithful Anglicans to the extent that they do not include the whole Christian tradition in their theology, piety and Scripture reading; Anglo-catholics will have been unfaithful to the Reformation in England if they not recognize the centrality of Scripture over all else; and Broad churches will likewise fall short if they don’t realize that there is nothing virtuous about being bland.
  • All of this points to the need of a more unified practice of piety.
  • If you don’t like it, become a Baptist. ***update*** (One misses the point if they think I’m using “Baptist” pejoratively.  I mean only that being Anglican is not simply uniquely British way of being a Congregationalist.)
  • Authority is not a four letter word.
  • I am most certainly full of myself.

Open Thread on Baptism

Joey, “The Charismanglican” recently made some comments and asked some questions in regards to baptism, especially Credo vs Paedo Baptism.  I think that perhaps it takes that particular post a bit off topic but I thought it a thread we might like to discuss and even though I do not currently have time to give a detailed response, I at least wanted to see if his comments would elicit any reactions.
Being soon to baptize my own children and having been raised a Credo Baptist, I think it would be fun to chat.

A slight change of direction. Let me give some background only to make sense of what I’m going to say at the end…which has everything to do with those personal experiences attributed to Christianity.

I come from a background where baptism is chosen by the baptized as an initiation into Christianity.

Now I’m in the Episcopal church, which baptizes infants.

I have a strong appreciation of catholic theology regarding the baptism of infants, but other theological hang-ups leave me unwilling to baptize my kids without their own desire. These stem from a stubborn belief that grace is big enough to not worry about their discipleship and a strong belief that baptism is an act of political allegiance…which can only be taken willingly.

I don’t want this to become a referendum on baptism and hijack this excellent post…all this was preface for this part:

My son Kyler just turned 12 and was telling me that he wanted to be baptized. I asked him if he understood what baptism is and talked to him about death, burial and resurrection. To be fair, I gave him as many reasons not to get baptized as reasons to get baptized. Counting the cost.

In particular, I told him this:

One day you will wonder why you got baptized. You will look out at the world and think to yourself: “I’m not sure God exists. I’m not sure that I’m willing to follow Jesus past this point.”

And that is when I and the rest of the Church will say to you, “It doesn’t matter. You are no longer your own. You made a promise and you are bound to keep it no matter how you feel. That’s the faith you signed up for…to die to yourself and to live by things unseen (or in this case, unfelt).”

This attitude of mine is probably a reaction (overreaction?) to the emotionalism of my youth…which never served me well in times of depression or serious paradigm shifts.

It’s time to see Christianity as something more like adoption or marriage or citizenship (metaphors that are scriptural). To break an adoption or a marriage or citizenship, it takes more than a vague feeling that you made a commitment that you no longer want to keep, or that you’re not sure you fit in.

No, it takes an act of will that says: “I’m not going to keep my promises anymore.”

Of course, there are reasons that certain promises can be broken. However, the very nature of all these promises (especially, in my experience, getting married or having children), are that you have NO idea what you’re getting into when you make them.

It is no small thing to break a promise. Especially in a Jewish religion such as Christianity. YHWH is a promise-making God.

Before someone is baptized, I see their feelings as fairly important in the equation. They are an individual, so to speak.

After someone is baptized, I see their feelings as secondary or tertiary. They are interdependent, so to speak.

It appears I believe that crucifying yourself high individualism might be a significant political meaning of baptism in this age.

I Made a Huge Mistake…

I walked into a picturesque local bookstore on the University campus and discovered, much to my surprise, a rather fine selection of historical the systematic theology.  I walk by this place every day!  Between this and Loome – the country’s largest used theological bookstore – I’m going to go broke!

We all fancy ourselves writers of some variety, and I fancy myself a wanna-be fiction writer.  So, I am going to post, in multiple parts, some of my fiction endeavors.  The first series was a “novel” I attempted to write in 2004.  It proved a couple of things to me: one, I predicted the market correctly and was right to have wanted to publish a novel about a vampire “love story” (hello, Stephanie Meyer – though mine was going in a MUCH different direction than her high school drama fest); second, it was silly to want to create some unique “piece of literature.”  I have pretty much abandoned it because, /1/ it is far too pretentious in the description department, /2/ I didn’t know where I was going, I just started writing (works for some, but apparently not me), /3/ it has become clear that I was trying to show off (still hurts to say that one).  So, since I believe in community and exposing your work to criticism, I offer this series as an opportunity to better all of our writing endeavors, because, frankly, when I train my eye to help iron out other people’s mistakes I become better at it myself. 

I should say two other things.  First, I apologize to James.  He is probably experiencing some sort of conniption right now, hoping he had seen the last of this long ago.  Second, while your compliments will not be rejected (I have to take my raging ego into consideration after all, If I don’t feed him – how will he continue to grow?), I am posting this to generate criticism.  Tear it up, take it apart, I have already left it for dead and I am hoping to find some element of it to salvage.

 

     Smoke plumed in the air and a small orange flame pierced the shroud of a dank night. Its illumination revealed the symmetry and proportion of a well-bred face. Like a beacon, the cigar’s ember surged as the cloud grew and billowed round a hard, pallid countenance. His eyes were striking, and now ascended as they drank in the gothic monument before him. St. Patrick’s Cathedral had long invoked a sense of awe and reflection in everyone who gazed upon it. But he viewed it with disenchanted eyes and any inspiration he may have once held was fleeting. The smoke clung to his hair and shoulders urging him back to the darkness as he abruptly passed through a streetlight and crossed 51st Street. Quickly, quietly, he moved forward into the ambient light of St. Patrick’s illuminated walls.

     The cathedral’s spires once reached toward heaven pointing to an awesome and enabling god. Now their cold stone facades impudently compete with temples erected to a more gratifying dominus. Massive, dark monstrosities, in smooth glass and impenetrable steel, tower over the cathedral with unseen spires pointing not upward, but inward, magnifying a more insidious deity. They congregate in a skyline of monetary exaltation that leaves New York’s sacred places forgotten and insignificant. Solicitously, St. Patrick’s patrons have politely bumped past one another in the nave of this refuge, clamoring to gain an audience with the Almighty. Night after night, they grope in vain supplication and morbid self-abasement – impotent and fearful.

     Lucius, not wanting to lurk exposed at the foot of this cross, avoided entry at the front door and stole toward the shadows of the cathedral’s west side. He crept backward into the darkness and sought cover from the drizzle. With the cool masonry at his back, he kept a keen eye on the Fifth Avenue traffic and waited patiently for his quarry to exit the monolith. Cars crept past, apparitions sloshing along in the evening’s pallor. He watched them file by like rats with noses thrust in the air on the scent of some acrid carcass. Their pilots, driven by instinct, longed to capitalize on the financial misfortunes of life, gorging themselves upon the misfortune of some wretched soul. As he mused, footfalls in the antechamber pricked his senses and inclined his regard to Patrick’s heavy door. After all of this time, the search was finally over.

     Father McCree pushed past the door out onto Fifth and shuddered under the autumn night’s breath. McCree felt the oppressiveness envelope him in its uncaring embrace prompting him to huddle his overcoat round his ample body. A shock of white hair was quickly capped under a weary fedora. His face was bright, but marred by a veiny bulbous nose. Obtrusive as it was, it threatened no detraction from his active, overgrown brows. He was many years past the prime of his life but still quick of wit and quite perceptive. A heavy saunter carried the good priest out of the doorway. In spite of his alert mind, he would have missed those piercing amber eyes glinting in the veiled corner of the entryway, if not for the pungent waft of cigar trailing to the left.

     McCree looked over and gasped as an impressive figure emerged from the blackness. He peered up over his nose at the looming creature swathed in an oxford gray suit made of silk. Lucius freed the cigar clamped between his teeth with his thumb and middle finger and released a billow of white smoke that strayed out of his mouth and rose past his nose. It undulated up over angular cheeks and danced around raven strands of long, wavy hair. He pitched the stub to the gutter, and it flipped and rolled in an array of sparks. McCree, thankful for a distraction from those terrible golden eyes, watched it settle and hiss in a puddle.

     “I am sorry if I alarmed you, Father.” Lucius nodded his head in nominal respect.

     McCree faltered and fumbled for words. “Indeed, you gave me quite the start. No matter though, no harm done.” His voice was rough after many years of rousing homilies, but still rang cordial.

     “I regret troubling you at this hour, but I find myself in dire need of your assistance. In fact, it seems really by luck that I have found you.”

     The priest was transfixed by the stranger’s presence. Lucius’s voice seemed more a presence in his mind than a tickle in his ear; the tone and caliber of which sang out to him like an orchestral movement, a mournful, autumnal chorus of cellos poured smooth and sweet over the priest’s ears.

     McCree felt himself assenting though his intuition screamed from the back of his consciousness defying this siren’s song. His impulses demanded that he plug his hairy ears with his fingers and run screaming. Yet his reason, assuring his safety, won over doubt; and the outsider’s voice allayed his fear. Even if it were the young hours of the morning, he felt compelled to acquiesce to the stranger’s appeal.

     “My son, I have sworn duty to the cross and to the church and I will hear your confession,” he said, straightening his posture as he turned hoping to retreat back within the refuge of Patrick’s walls.

     “Yes, well, I don’t believe we’ll have any of that tonight, thank you,” Lucius sneered.

     “My purpose is merely to have a piece of your mind.” His eyes sparkled and McCree shuddered again. “My name,” he said presenting his hand “is Lucius.”

     “A pleasure, I assure you.” McCree offered in feigned confidence, failing to reciprocate with his own name, but shaking Lucius’ hand nonetheless.

     The priest squirmed in the hard, sinewy grip of the stranger. He tried to halt the gesture, only to be disappointed by a prodigious strength that steadfastly held him in place, then altered his course. Much to his chagrin, after a small scuffle that sent his hat sailing, McCree found himself spun around to face the walkway.

     “Why don’t we take a little stroll?” Lucius smiled wryly, and he led the priest down Fifth Avenue to 51st Street. They crossed Fifth Avenue at the intersection and started toward the Hudson River. All around them, buildings loomed, blocking the starry night while casting ominous shadows. And as the evening waned, the mist grew to a dense fog that lurked in the alleys, creeping out to the streets gaining boldness as it grew.

     The outsider led the priest by half a stride. Vigorously, they strode past Broadway and then Eighth Avenue. The river drew ever closer. In a rare display, the city had grown dormant. Even the dependable deluge of traffic had subsided. The night pressed in on them, stalking them like a hunter. The street lights hummed a mournful liturgy, their radiance dulled under the oppression of the fog. The priest’s footsteps were the only sound; they echoed in his ears and filled the vacant street.

     “McCree isn’t it?” Lucius inquired. The good Father froze in his tracks, but had no time to react before the back of his arm, replete with flesh, ached with the cruelty of Lucius’s grip. The physical warning was followed by a sharp command, “Keep moving!”

     “I arrived in New York only hours ago. How could you possibly know my name?” The priest’s mind raced, searching a lifetime of faces until finally he came to an alarming conclusion. “Who sent you?” He demanded.  His activities were supposed to be kept in the strictest confidence. If Lucius had followed him to New York, then he must learn who sent him.

If we can generate a fair bit of dialogue on this, then I will continue to post and would love to see you guys post material in a similar state of abandonment.
